Seglo vs Gingr: what your software can say to an Australian client
24 August 2026 · 5 min read
Gingr has run kennels and daycares for years and beats us at several things, all named below. What decides it for an Australian salon is smaller than a feature list: whether the software can talk to your clients here at all.

Full disclosure: we build Seglo. Everything below is quoted from Gingr’s own pricing page, terms and knowledge base, read in August 2026. Where Gingr is ahead of us it says so, and one section is entirely about staying where you are.

Available in the U.S. and Canada
Gingr sells two-way texting as a paid add-on, and the sentence that matters is on their own pricing page: “Have real-time SMS conversations with your customers right from your app. Available in the U.S. and Canada.” Their knowledge base says the same of the automatic messages: “System SMS is currently limited to customers within the United States and Canada.”
There is a way around it. Their help centre tells facilities outside North America to go and sign up with somebody else: “It is possible to use the SMS features in Gingr if your facility resides outside of North America by using integration with a third-party company called Esendex. This integration does cost money, but is not charged through your Gingr subscription.” Seglo texts from the number already on your shopfront, here, on day one.
The photo of the finished dog
Picture messaging is not a separate Gingr product but a larger version of the same one. Their pricing page describes the Messaging Bundle as “Everything in 2-Way SMS plus picture and video messaging, text marketing campaigns, auto-replies, and canned messages.” Their help centre prices it at $225 per subdomain per year. It is a good product that sits inside the texting which stops at the North American border.
And one line worth knowing before you sign: “all SMS communications older than 60 days will be automatically removed from the app.” Two months of history with a client, then gone. Seglo sends and receives real pictures in Australia and keeps the thread. Why that is rare here.
And then the phone rings
Gingr has a Calls feature and it is not the thing the word suggests. Their knowledge base opens the topic with “Businesses can manually track customer calls so they can keep track of communication between owners and the business.” The setup article adds that you list the numbers staff ring from so the business can “manually track which phone number customers are contacted with.” It is a note about a call that happened somewhere else.
We found no evidence of Gingr answering, routing or transcribing one, and none of an AI: their knowledge base returns a single article for artificial intelligence and it is about adding a location. In Seglo the business number rings inside the app, client and pet already on screen.
Two hours of drying time
This is the one place the two are built differently rather than featured differently. In Gingr a groom is an Additional Service with a single duration, and their setup article tells you how to pick it: “Duration: the average duration of this service (if the duration varies, set the most common duration).” One number, one block, and the dryer is inside it.
In Seglo a service splits into steps, and a step that needs nobody is a rest step. The dog is on the dryer, the groomer is not, and those minutes go back into the day as time you can sell. Five dogs in, it is not a feature, it is a groomer.
Your accountant will decide this one
Search Gingr’s knowledge base for Xero and it returns nothing at all. Their accounting path is QuickBooks Online, through somebody else again: “Sales receipts will need to be imported to Quickbooks using a third party service called SaasAnt.”
Seglo reconciles with Xero in both directions and the pay run exports into it. Our invoice is in Australian dollars with GST already on it, billed per business rather than per location, so a second room is not a second bill. Gingr’s own terms settle both halves of that: “payment shall be in U.S. Dollars” and “billing for each additional Customer location shall begin as soon as Customer formally requests the addition of such location.”
Where Gingr is the better answer
Read this part properly; for a lot of shops it ends the argument. Gingr tracks vaccinations the way an inspector expects: an expiry date per shot, immunisation reminders, and an expired vaccinations report you can filter by upcoming reservation. In Seglo it is a field on your intake form, recorded and searchable, and it does not expire or warn you.
Gingr takes deposits, and a whole corner of the product runs them: collect, apply at checkout, refund, forfeit, convert to store credit. Seglo holds a card on file instead. Their reports download to Excel or a PDF; ours are on screen with no export button. If you board or run daycare they are purpose-built for it, with a live kennel grid, feeding schedules and medication tracking, and we are not.
Their import is better too: from your old backup file for a published $350 in four business days, or a free spreadsheet template. Seglo automates Square, and from anything else a person here does it with you.
What each costs
Gingr’s Spa plan, the grooming one, is $109 a month, or $100 paid annually, in United States dollars, per location. Two-way texting is $165 per subdomain per year on top, plus four cents an incoming message past five hundred, and the picture bundle is $225. Their terms add that fees are “non-refundable and non-cancelable” and that Gingr “may increase any Fee, at any time, by providing Customer with at least thirty (30) days’ prior written notice.”
Seglo is priced in Australian dollars with GST included. Calls and picture messaging are in the product. The AI receptionist is a separate $149 a month plus 40 cents a minute, and most salons never switch it on.
Which should you pick?
Stay on Gingr
- You board or run daycare, and the kennel grid and medication tracking are the job.
- Vaccination expiry dates and an expired-shots report are why you are shopping.
- You want the deposit taken before the dog arrives, not a card held.
- You need reports that download, into Excel or a PDF.
Move to Seglo
- You are in Australia and want texting, pictures and the phone to work here.
- Drying time is eating your day and you want those minutes back as capacity.
- Your accountant is on Xero and you would rather pay in dollars you earn.
- Which groomer can take a nervous doodle should be the booking engine's problem.
