How do I run a dog grooming business?

Running a dog grooming business is four decisions repeated every week, and most of what groomers describe as being flat out is one of them left unmade. What you ask before a dog is booked decides whether the slot you held matches the groom you have to do. What your prices are keyed to, breed or size or coat condition or time on the table, decides whether the difficult dogs are being subsidised by the easy ones. How the day is shaped, fixed appointment times or drop-off windows, decides how many dogs fit around the drying and the waiting. And how much owners are told before they think to ring decides how much of the day goes to the phone. Add a second pair of hands and every one of those answers has to be written down instead of carried in your head, which is why the first hire is where an informal setup usually breaks. None of it is about grooming faster. It is about the hours around the groom.

Every grooming guide

  1. How much to charge for a dog groom

A grooming price is a bet on time placed before you've seen the coat — what an hour on your table has to earn, what the number should be keyed to, and how to quote a dog you haven't met.

  2. The order you run the dogs in decides how many fit

Sequencing a grooming day around the bath and the dryer instead of around who booked first, and what a tighter order costs the dogs waiting in the crate.

  3. What to look for in dog grooming software, and what to ignore

The handful of criteria that actually decide a grooming software purchase — how the bill behaves as you grow, whether the diary models the work or just the hour, who answers the phone in your timezone, and what you can get back out.

  4. When a booking form comes back blank

An unticked box is not a "no". Which missing answers you can carry into the day, which have to be closed before the dog arrives, and why the record needs a third state.

  5. Before the slot, or after they've confirmed?

What has to be answered before a grooming slot is held, what can wait for the confirmation screen, and the one question worth asking twice.

  6. They moved it. What happens to the deposit?

A rescheduled groom leaves the same hole in your day as a cancellation. How much notice to ask for, and what happens to the deposit when the booking moves.

  7. The first groom is the one you're guessing at

A regular's booking is a job you've already measured and a first-time dog's is a guess. What that guess costs, and the four ways a groomer ends up paying for it.

  8. What earns a permanent place on a dog's record

The test for what goes on a grooming client's record is whether a stranger could act on it before the dog is on the table.

  9. Which questions are worth losing a booking over?

A question earns its place on a dog grooming booking form when its answer changes the length of the slot, the price, or who takes the dog.

  10. Straight in, or ask first?

Which dog grooming clients should book online instantly and which should come as a request — the line is whether you can size the job before the dog arrives.

  11. Who gets to put a dog in your diary?

Online booking for dog groomers is three choices, not two: they book and it's confirmed, they request and you approve, or everything comes through you. What each one really costs.

  12. How fast you have to answer a booking request

The number that matters is not how quickly you usually reply. It is the longest anyone will ever wait, and it has to be shorter than the notice on the slot they asked for.

  13. Why a Nail Clip Shouldn't Wait Behind a Full Groom (Smart Drop-Off Scheduling)

Three dogs dropped off at 9 AM — a full groom, a bath, and a nail clip. The nail clip owner waits until 3 PM? That's broken. Here's how smart scheduling fixes your drop-off board.

  14. You already know when the dog is due back

How to get grooming clients to rebook: why the coat sets the interval, why pickup is the moment to offer the date, and who is actually worth following up.
